Reptiles
Elite Ecology provides comprehensive reptile surveys to support planning applications, development projects, and conservation requirements. Our ecologists assess your site to determine the presence, distribution, and habitat use of protected reptile species, ensuring your project remains compliant with UK wildlife legislation.

Many habitats across the UK, such as grassland, heathland, brownfield sites and shrubs, may support native reptiles, including slow worms, common lizards, grass snakes, and adders. All native UK reptiles are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 (as amended), meaning developers must demonstrate that appropriate steps have been taken to avoid harm. They are also afforded protection under the Natural Environment Rural Communities (NERC) Act 2006, which requires local authorities and public bodies to legally consider their conservation.

Our Reptile Surveys

We begin with a habitat suitability assessment to determine whether reptiles may be present on site. Where suitable habitat exists, presence/absence surveys are completed using survey mats placed in strategic locations and monitored over multiple visits during appropriate weather conditions. If reptiles are recorded, further surveys may be needed to estimate population size and develop suitable mitigation measures.

Once surveys are complete, we provide a clear and fully compliant report detailing survey results, potential constraints, and recommended mitigation strategies. Our team works closely with planners and developers to minimise ecological impact and support project timelines.
